UEGF SecretariatFigures show that 30% of the European population are affected by a gastroenterological disease at least once during their lifetime. Despite this, the topic of gastroenterology has not yet become a priority on the European health agenda. The UEGF Public Affairs Committee will now endeavour to promote gastroenterology at a public and political level, to manifest the topic to the general public and most importantly to the decision makers not only in Brussels, but also to politicians in each European country. Promotion of research, early diagnosis and treatment of gastroenterological diseases will be at the top of the UEGF Public Affairs Committee agenda, and will therefore contribute to the development of an effective health policy for the citizens of Europe.
The UEGF comprises of all of the major European societies with an interest in disease of the digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, intestine, and bowel, and is therefore seen as the ideal stakeholder for the European Union. We will only be successful in achieving common goals by presenting gastroenterology as a unity, with one voice, with the same objectives and strategy to be at the top of the agenda in Brussels, the heart of EU policy making.
